How Do You Revive An Old Fence?

Power wash is the most effective way to clean a time-worn fence, and the types of power washers most homeowners have will do the job just fine. In fact, professionals using commercial-grade equipment must be careful not to apply too much concentrated pressure that can harm wood.

If you have access to a power washer, pick a wide-angle tip and then measure the strain. Never blast away. Detergent is not sufficient to clean a wooden fence and may even lead to harm if used improperly.

After washing the fence, let it dry completely before applying a sealer or a stain. If it's warm and sunny, there should be plenty of time to dry for three days.

Many types of wood appear to be gray over time, and staining or sealing can make it look even longer. Sealing a fence is a good DIY work, and if you want a toned seal, you don't need to apply a coat of paint or stain.

Choose a tone that is a little darker than you want the finished product to look because the sun can with time, lighten whatever hue you add. But be vigilant of going too dark. Dark fences are going to trap heat from the sun, raising the risk of warping.

Here is what you need:

  • Water

  • Bleach

  • Dish Detergent

  • Pump Up Sprayer

  • Protective Gloves

  • Ready Seal

  • Paint Brush

  • Paint Roller

Steps to Revive an Old Fence:

Step 1: Make a mixture of water, bleach and detergent. You want to start with a mixture of 70% water and 25% bleach with a small amount of dish detergent.

Step 2: Put on your protective gloves before using a spray pump to spray the fence with the mixture.

Note: If you do not see the wood lighten enough, improve the mixture by increasing the percentage of bleach to water until the wood lightens immediately after application.

Step 3: Allow the fence to sit for about 20 minutes before rinsing off the hose fence. Enable the fence to dry completely before applying Ready Seal.

Step 4: Once the fence is fully dry, apply Ready Seal with either a paint brush, a paint roller or a spray pump.

Note: Ready Seal is self leveling so you don't have to think about applying it perfectly. The main thing is to get the stain on the fence. It will sink in and provide long-term security.

Step 5: Enjoy the fence! When the Ready Seal is applied to the fence, you don't have to worry about it being rained because the water will be peeled off the fence within minutes of application.
