The John Muir National Historic Site is located in Martinez, Contra Costa County, California, in the Bay Area of San Francisco. It protects the 14-room Italianate Victorian mansion where naturalist and writer John Muir lived, as well as the Muir family's historic 325-acre stretch of native oak woodland and grassland. The main position is on the outskirts of town, under State Route 4, also known as "John Muir Parkway." Dr. John Strentzel, Muir's father-in-law, designed the mansion in 1883, and Muir became a partner in operating his 2,600-acre fruit ranch with him.
