Which Is Cheaper Vinyl Or Wood Fence?

Wood is a hard opponent. Wood once dominated the fencing market with its long history, its many virtues, and its popularity. It must, however, deal with technologically advanced materials these days, many of which give excellent advantages at great value. So who could compete with wood, possibly? That Vinyl fencing, first implemented in the 1980s, lasts much longer than wood, requires almost no maintenance and can not be broken by the archenemies of wood (termites, fungus, dry rot, and fire). Vinyl is far more costly than wood, however. So, if you're planning to create a new fence, which do you choose: wood or vinyl?

Comparison between Wood and Vinyl

  • Aesthetics

Some like the look of a true timber fence. It is conventional, it has an American-wide attraction and a great deal of character. But wood also breaks down faster. While in a mint state, it can rust, decay, rot and maybe even be eaten by termites or other pesticides over time. All of this to say: if you would like to keep your fence pristine and lovely, choose vinyl. You don't have to concern yourself with chipping, fading stain treatments, termites, or weathering. Furthermore, vinyl is now available in a number of colors and patterns that even resemble real wood.    Whatever material you use, ensure that you pick and correctly match a high quality fence, as these factors also affect the aesthetic appeal of the fence.

  • Cost

In the beginning, vinyl is more costly than wood. But you won't have to pay anything after your initial investment. Except in severe weather situations, your vinyl clamping can remain safe and pretty for years without expensive maintenance or repair. Wood needs periodic treatments and stains though it is cheaper at the beginning. And as it doesn't last as long as vinyl, you probably have to replace the barrier for more than ten or 15 years if you live in your building. Consider the scale of your project when contemplating wood vs vinyl fencing. You may want to go with wood if you have a limited budget, but if your yard is big you can choose the vinyl if the area in which you fenced is limited and you can afford the upside rate.

  • Maintenance

No maintenance is required for vinyl fencing. Although you may wish to shut down the build-up dirt from time to time, this work is always done by rain! On the other hand, for wood to look clean and presentable and last for several years, you have to do a lot of work. It must be annually washed, handled, stained every year for the first three years, and stained every second year (and unfortunately, staining can be expensive and time-consuming). Moreover, as the years pass, wood rots. You have to repair the damaged wood as it warps and starts to fall apart.

  • Durability

Which product is stronger? Which can withstand turbulent weather? Which will live the longer life? Vinyl wins this first match hands-down. Vinyl can stand up to harsh weather, pests, decay, and fungus. In fact, without any help from you, it can easily last decades. Although wood can last around 20 years, it will break down over time and you will have to repair and replace the fence’s lumber. The type of wood will affect the product’s durability as well, as some species of wood are more structurally strong and resistant to rot and decay (cedar and redwood are best). If you want your wood fence to last a while, you will need to invest in a pressure-treated and chemically-treated product, and you may need to apply a preservative sealant. What a hassle! Stick with vinyl if you want a strong, long-lasting fence.
